# Feed the Beast launcher is dead. Long live MultiMC! asanetargoss, 2022-06-18 ## The Curseforge Toggle In a previous post, I mentioned my intent to attempt to make the Hardcore Alchemy modpack available on the Feed the Beast launcher as a third-party modpack. The assumption I made was that the FTB launcher was easy to use and made it easy and convenient to install third-party modpacks from Curseforge. However, I've realized that because Curseforge modpacks are disabled by default [^curseforge_toggle], this effectively negates the main convenience factor in the installation step, due to the player having to read instructions from another website. The default behavior also suggests that assuring that third-party modpacks function correctly is not a high priority. For this reason, there are no longer plans at this time to make Hardcore Alchemy available as a third-party modpack on the Feed the Beast launcher. I don't have interest in uploading the Hardcore Alchemy modpack to Curseforge solely for use by the Curseforge launcher, because Curseforge doesn't have the best reputation ethics-wise or usability-wise. ## Alternative launchers There's a lot that I like about MultiMC, and Hardcore Alchemy will be available as a MultiMC modpack for the forseeable future. One major issue with the current MultiMC setup is the bandwidth/download speed. When you're downloading the modpack, you're basically downloading a complete `.minecraft` folder with some additional MultiMC-specific files. If there is sufficient need from MultiMC users, I could attempt to create an alternate MultiMC instance which uses less bandwidth. At this time, there aren't any popular launchers that I feel are worth the effort, but I will definitely be keeping an eye out. That being said, this was a lot of effort for me that I don't want to replicate anytime soon. When I do have the motivation again, it needs to be something I can depend upon and feel good about long-term. ## Mod uploads Even though I'm no longer uploading the modpack to Curseforge, I've made some (admittedly totally voluntary on my end) commitments to various mod authors, and I'd like to stay consistent there. Which means I still intend to assist in uploading some fixes to Curseforge. Mods that are already on Curseforge will stay there, although in certain cases I may not update the Curseforge versions.^ Jump to top

[^curseforge_toggle]: I only know this from [somewhat reliable hearsay](https://old.reddit.com/r/feedthebeast/comnents/v07zhr/what_are_the_options_for_playing_curseforge/iaf7cyg/). I haven't been able to personally verify this, or verify how bad it is, as the Feed the Beast installer is currently broken for me, due in part to a bug in Install4J. A Feed the Beast launcher developer [expressed buyer's remorse](https://twitter.com/ThePaul_T/status/1532775604977803264) from purchasing an Install4J license for use in the launcher for thousands of dollars. They also said that fixing the bug in the Feed the Beast installer was lower priority, which also wasn't reassuring.
